A good friend of mine, Jeanne Braham, has written a book, Another Language, that explores the lives of disabled men, women, and children who have been paired with assistance dogs from NEADS (the National Education for Assistance Dog Services, located in Princeton, Massachusetts).  Jeanne and I have collaborated on two other books, Made by Hand and The Light within the Light. Over a year ago she told me about Another Language. I listened with deep and profound interest as she told me about her interviews with more than a dozen NEADS clients who are recipients of highly trained dogs.  The stories those folks have to tell are truly remarkable. Equally remarkable are the many color photographs of clients and their NEADS dogs taken by Robert Floyd that serve as illustrations.  The project has been accepted for publication by Bauhan Publishing, a small publishing house in Peterborough, New Hampshire. As you probably know, multiple color photos are very expensive for a small, independent publisher like Bauhan Publishing to reproduce. I am here trying to raise some funds to help underwrite these considerable costs.

Jeanne has documented and seen that the use of assistance dogs is utterly transforming for many disabled people, including returning combat veterans from the Afghanistan and Iraq wars.  To this end, the proceeds from the sale of the book will benefit NEADS mission of placing more than fifty dogs to deserving clients each year.

I engraved this image of a happy pup as a vehicle to raise money to see the book completed. There are 100 impressions in the edition printed on an archival paper (German-made Zerkall). Each is signed and numbered and can be personalized on request. The image area measures 4.5 x 5.5. The paper size is 7.5w x 8.5. We offer it for $100 (plus $7.50 for US shipping and handling; please inquire for international rates) in support of this project. Neither Jeanne nor I will receive any of the funds raised. Our hope is that Another Language can get the story of NEADS out to the public, reaching as many people as possible because we believe that it can and will make a difference.
